Turning Google Street View Into Art

I'm fascinated with Google Street View, how you can travel the world without leaving your computer seat, so I was pleased to find 'The Nine Eyes of Google Street View, a project by Canadian artist, Jon Rafman who has turned the captures of Google Street View into a form of art. He has selected captures from Street View that range from beautiful landscapes to documentary photographs that make a social statement. Many of the images appear to have a carefully crafted composition, looking as if they were taken by a professional photographer. These stunning images, captured by a machine, challenge the concept of art and the artist.

Jane Mcleish Kelsey

This was my favourite editorial in the recent issue of Lula magazine. The photographer, Jame Mcleish Kelsey is brilliant at working with natural lighting, and gives the photos an effortless, natural feel. I adored the location of a typical, small American town and the naive, childlike styling that was used. 

Photography in the Fog

There was a stunning think fog the other morning, and I couldn't help but run out and take some photos. I thought the gloomy weather was perfect for shooting in a maze field, which for me have connotations of horror and mystery due to their use in horror and sci-fi films.

Whilst taking the photos I was influenced by the photographer 'przypadek' whose work is available to see on Deviant Art. His work often consists of figures in dark, moody, rural landscapes. The models usually have simple, static poses and appear alien-like in the large landscapes they stand in.

Ana Cabaleiro

Ana Cabaleiro is a Spanish photographer who i discovered on flickr. Her photographs have a sense of freedom and spontaneity. The shallow depth of focus, natural light and warm colours make her work seem like hazy memories from a summer road trip, and make me want to go travelling.

Ellen Rogers

Ellen Rogers is one of my favourite artists on Flickr; she is a fashion and portrait photographer who uses entirely analogue and darkroom techniques. I find her work so striking as it is completely different to any work from other contemporary photographers. I particularly love how her work is reminiscent of very early portraiture photography that used hand colouring on black and white prints. Her work also seems to have an other-wordly, mystical quality, created partly by the beautiful models who are often dressed draped in jewels or flowers, seeming like characters from a fairytale.
